Chroma is joining Replit, and Chroma Cloud stops taking writes on November 22

Chroma, the company behind the open-source ChromaDB vector database, signed a definitive agreement on October 23 to join Replit. Terms weren't disclosed. Open-source ChromaDB stays Apache 2.0, but the hosted Chroma Cloud is winding down over 60 days.

CEO Jeff Huber wrote that the two will build a context layer so company agents know what the organization knows. ChromaDB and Chroma's Foundation product continue at Replit. Replit's CEO Amjad Masad and president Michele Catasta were early Chroma investors.

The part with a deadline: Chroma Cloud writes stop on November 22, 2026, and reads stop on December 22, 2026. Any app that keeps adding embeddings has to move before the first date, not the second.

Huber says open-source Chroma gets about 6 million downloads a month, and that more code from private repos has been moved into the Apache 2.0 project. Replit says it will keep contributing.

Why it matters

If any of your RAG or agent memory runs on Chroma Cloud, you have four weeks to keep writes working. Self-hosted ChromaDB isn't affected.

Try this

Search your code and env files for your Chroma Cloud host and CloudClient calls. For each hit, pick where writes go next (self-hosted ChromaDB or another vector store) and test one full re-index before November 22.
