OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26. The API model ID is gpt-6.1-terra. It takes text and images (no audio or video), has a 1.05M-token context window with 922K max input and 128K max output, and its knowledge cutoff is June 1, 2026. reasoning.effort runs from none to max, with medium as the default. Tool calling, including the computer_use tool, needs the Responses API.
Standard pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 cached and $5 output. Two details on the model page are easy to miss. Prompts over 272K input tokens are billed at 2x input and 1.5x output for the whole request, and Batch and Flex are 50% cheaper than Standard.
OpenAI's own numbers (self-reported, we haven't run them): on its Agents' Last Exam computer-use benchmark, Terra at medium effort scores 15 points above GPT-5.6 Terra at about a third of the cost, and matches GPT-6 Astra at a tenth of the price per token. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 at max effort it solves 50.3% of tasks, against 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra. OpenAI still points the hardest coding work at GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra.
GitHub made Terra generally available in Copilot the same day (Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise), billed at OpenAI's list price under usage-based billing. On Hacker News, OpenAI's Ted Sanders described it as similar to Astra and Sol on vision and computer use but much faster, and a bit worse on most other things.
